Along with a scaling and root planing, Arestin can help get your gums back to a healthy and beautiful state! What Is Periodontitis?Periodontitis is the most advanced form of gum disease. Symptoms of periodontitis include:
Advanced periodontitis affects your gums, connective ligaments, and underlying bone. Unfortunately, periodontal disease can cause irreparable damage to these supporting tissues. Without treatment, tooth loss is virtually inevitable. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIH), periodontal disease is the number one cause of tooth loss for American adults. What Is Arestin?Arestin is a concentrated antibiotic that we apply locally to a deep periodontal pocket. The medication, minocycline HCI, comes in the form of microspheres that remain active in the pocket long after their application. In other words, Arestin provides long-term results that ultimately reduce your pocket depths and help your gums heal more efficiently. Arestin is an effective way to combat periodontitis due to the nature of the disease. Periodontal disease is an infection caused by the bacteria in plaque, the harmful biofilm that constantly forms on and around our teeth. In response to these bacteria, our immune system produces toxins that cause an infection in healthy tissues, which we refer to as periodontal disease. Arestin targets bacteria and reduces the production of inflammatory toxins. Reducing these toxins is one of the most effective ways to eliminate your infection. Arestin has also been proven to prevent the reoccurrence of bacterial growth for up to nine months following your procedure. Arestin With a Deep CleaningArestin is often just one part of a larger treatment plan that involves scaling and root planing, also known as “deep cleaning.” During a scaling and root planing, Dr. Kabbani or our dental hygienist will use an ultrasonic scaler to eliminate plaque and tartar deposits from the surfaces of your teeth, both above and below the gumline. Once your teeth have been properly cleaned, we smooth out any rough areas on the roots of your teeth. Root planing helps prevent plaque, tartar, and bacterial growth from reoccurring below the gum tissues following your cleaning. The goal is to reduce the depths of your periodontal pockets and return your gums to a pink, healthy, and snug status. Arestin ensures your gums stay that way. Without the use of an antibiotic, baseline levels of bacteria may return in just a few days. Maintaining proper oral hygiene is also a vital part of preventing a periodontal disease reoccurrence. A scaling and root planing, Arestin, and regular brushing and flossing will drastically improve your periodontal health! Talk with Dr. Kabbani during your initial consultation to learn more!
